nitrous oxide, known as dinitrogen monoxide, or N20 for short, is a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas that affects the central nervous system. It has been successfully used in medicine, especially for the treatment of anxious patients, for more than 150 years.
A mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is supplied via a small nasal mask (with various selectable, pleasant fragrances). The concentration of laughing gas is individually adjusted and gradually increased until a pleasant and relaxed feeling is achieved. You decide when this state is reached (usually after about 4 to 5 minutes).
After completion of the dental treatment, you will breathe oxygen for a few minutes until the effect of the nitrous oxide has completely dissipated.
After that, you can leave the practice unaccompanied and unimpaired.
The nitrous oxide helps to relax and reduce anxiety during dental treatment. As well as the fear, the sensation of pain also decreases. However, you remain conscious and responsive at all times during the treatment.
Patients describe the sensation of laughing gas sedation as.
- Tingling of the hands and feet
- Warm feeling
- Shortened sense of time
- Deep relaxation
- Feeling of lightness or heaviness
Nitrous oxide sedation is a very safe procedure with few complications that is used millions of times worldwide. Since laughing gas is not metabolized by the body but is completely exhaled again, no complications occur. Very rarely, nausea or slight dizziness may occur, but these can be reversed after the nitrous oxide supply is switched off and oxygen is inhaled. Therefore, this method is also suitable for dental treatment of children.
There are only a few contraindications that exclude nitrous oxide sedation. These include eye surgery (vitrectomy), nasal obstruction, ileus or pregnancy. Your dentist can clarify these in a preliminary consultation so that risks can be excluded.
Important is, that we know your health condition before the treatment! Therefore, please inform us about any medications you are taking, drugs, alcohol or sedatives and about existing diseases and surgeries.
Recommended, to have a light meal before the treatment and not to eat or drink anything for about 2 hours before the appointment.
Nitrous oxide sedation is not suitable for pregnant patients. Pregnant women should not be in the treatment room during the treatment.
The cost of nitrous oxide sedation depends on the duration of the dental treatment. In addition, you will purchase your own nasal mask, the scent of which you can choose at will.
